Latest Maths Successes
at the Maharishi School
The 2009 National UK Intermediate Maths Challenge
(aimed at students in Years 9, 10 & 11), saw ten Maharishi
School students excel, obtaining 2 Gold, 4 Silver and 4 Bronze
certificates between them.

Stevie
Duggins (Year 9), Llewelyn Griffiths
(Year 9), Hermione Hanley-Lloyd (Year 10)
and Ruth Ingram
(Year 11) received Bronze certificates (Ruth missed Silver
by only 1 point). Molly Deary (Year 11),
Abe Rossiter (Year 11), Jed O'Connor
(Year 10) and Thomas Mitchell (Year 9) all
obtained Silver certificates. This is especially significant
for Thomas as he is only in Year 9!
Freddy Fuller (Year 11) and Jonathan
Jedrczak (Year 10) both received Gold certificates
- a truly admirable result. Jonathan has again been invited
to the next level examination, the European-wide 'Pink Kangaroo'.
His reward was to sit a gruelling 1-hour exam in March.
If you want to get a feel for just how significant
these achievements are, consider this:
Less
than 10% of the UK's Year 9, 10 & 11 student population
enter these competitions. (Schools enter only their top students.)
Only 40% of the entrants obtain certificates.
Receiving
any of these certificates places the recipient in
the top 4% of the UK's mathematics students!
Receiving a Silver certificates
places the recipient in the top 2%, and receipt of a Gold
certificate places the recipient in the top 1%!
All ten of these Maharishi School students
deserve our congratulations.

Swim
The
annual school Swimathon took place on Saturday 7th
November 2008 at Edge
Hill College swimming pool and was a great success.
Swimmers
notched up 1725 lengths and to date £1300 has been raised
in sponsorship. Congratulations to Champion swimmer Rhys Evans
who swam 180 lengths, and to Champion fundraiser Jainee Patel
who raised £211. It’s just great to see
students, staff and parents having a great time together for
the benefit of the school, and keeping fit in the process.
Look
at that Subway
Mrs
Scott, not for the first time, has also been improving
the local environment by arranging murals in one of the Skelmersdale
subways.
Years
7 and 8 are really proud of their efforts, and rightly so.
The local police are grateful too, and even tried to get in
on the act!
We’ve
got a new minibus
What a treat! Two more passenger seats than
before. It’s higher, so adults can stand up straight
inside. A radio! Beautiful white paintwork with blue and gold
lettering (thanks to Inspire
Graphic Design for the layout). We plan to change the
Ofsted quote on the back window regularly, so everyone can
see just how much Ofsted like us!
GCSE
results
Once again, Maharishi School pupils excelled in their
GCSE examinations in 2009. The pass rate at grade C or above
was 94%. Our average percentage of passes at A or A*
is still at three times the national average (since 1990).
In 2009, 61% of passes were at A or A*.
Poetry
Maharishi School pupils regularly win awards in poetry
competitions and this year is no exception.
Three
pupils, Ruth Ingram, Jed O’Connor and Thomas
Mitchell were highly commended in the 2009
Foyle Young Poets competition and Jed O’Connor was
also one of only three winners internationally of the Norman
Hidden Prize.
After 19 years doing a great job as English
teacher and Deputy Head of the Upper School, Doctor
Cliff Yates has gone on to pastures new and is now
pursuing a career as a freelance writer and lecturer. Many
thanks and best wishes to Dr Yates. As his replacement, we
are pleased to welcome Mr Matthew Stott as
our new English teacher. Mr Stott, as well as being an experienced
English teacher is also a part-time actor. We look forward
to enjoying the results of this new, dramatic, speciality.
