Phonics and Reading Schemes

Maharishi Free School

Phonics and reading at Reception, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two

Foundation Stage and Key Stage One use a systematic synthetic phonics approach called ‘Letters and Sounds’.   Phonics is taught every day together with spelling practise at Key Stage One.

We use a wide variety of reading schemes including the ‘Oxford Reading Tree’ and ‘Jolly Phonics’.  We organise them according to the recognised ‘Colour Book Band’ scheme of progression, to allow for variety and continuity.

At Key Stage Two the ‘Support for Spelling’ programme is used with spelling activities from the publisher Nelson as an additional resource.  We also teach comprehension skills across Key Stage One and Key Stage Two using both the scheme from the publishers Nelson and Schofield and Simms.

Year 2 and 6 also use practise SATS comprehension papers.
